The 6^th grade girl’s had nine girls on their volleyball team. They were Jackie, Alyssa, Amanda, Lauren, Miranda, Nancy, Christa, Ashleigh, and Lauren. They were coached by Joan Trecaso and Mary Mondozzi. Their games were usually on the weekends but they had some during the week. They played against Saint Barnabas, Sacred Heart, Saint Vincent, Holy Family, and Saint Hillary. Holy family was the toughest competitor in their bracket. IHM’s record for the season was five wins and three losses. In the first game of the tournament they played Saint Matthew’s and won. In the second game of the tournament they played Our Lady of Victory and they won, advancing them to the semi-finals. In the semi-final they beat Saint Frances de Sales, which advanced them to the championships. In the championship match they played Saint Hilary’s. They won the first two games and became CYO Silver Division champs. Ashleigh had the winning serve.

They practiced on Monday’s and Friday’s right after school from 2:30 to 4:30. They practiced serving, bumping, spiking, and setting. Some of the girls on the team serve overhand but most of the girls served underhand. Since last season some of the girls overhand serves have gotten stronger and more powerful. A great goal is to serve seven consecutive serves over in a row. Every girl on the volleyball team has gotten seven consecutive serves in a row this season. They don’t have specific positions, like setter or hitter, that they play every game. They try to get a bump, set, spike and whoever is in the setting position or is in good position to set will set it up. There are three games in one volleyball match. The first two are played to 25 points and the third game is played to 15 points. They don’t have to play the third game unless each team wins one of the first two games. In each game they have to win by two points, like 27 to 25.

Joan Trecaso has coached for two years. In grade school she played CYO volleyball. She enjoys coaching. She enjoys watching the girl’s achieve their goals, improve their skills over the years, and win as a team. Joan Trecaso went to a CYO Volleyball Coaches Clinic, a camp for coaches and the seventh and eighth grade players at IHM. At the camps she learned many drills that she used at practices. This year during practice she had them serving overhand.
