Track and field is a really fun sport. Some people
think that it only involves running, but there are so many other things you can
do. It is not exactly a sport yet at
I.H.M., but it could be if we could get a coach and get enough people to
participate.
In this sport, you can do the long jump. This is when
you run towards a white line and jump outward as if you are running in the air.
In the standing long jump, you stand at the white line, bend your knees and
swing your arms to get momentum, and then jump out as far as you can. When you
land, you land in sand. The distance that you jumped is your score. It is
measured from the white line to the closest imprint in the sand that your body
made. That is why it is very important to fall forward if you have to fall at
all. You do however, get three tries. Having long legs is a plus, but you never
know how far you can jump. I am small but was able to jump nine feet and eight
inches in fourth grade.
In the high jump, you run and jump over a bar that is
in a horizontal position. The object is to get over the bar without knocking it
off the supports. Your score is the distance jumped before knocking the bar
off. Again, you get three chances.
The races include: 50 meter, 100 meter, 200 meter, 400
meter, 800 meter, and 1200 meter. The
races that you choose to run would depend on your skills and preference as to
whether you would want to run a short sprint or a long race. There are also
relays and hurdles. Relays involve running part of the race and then passing a
baton to a team mate. Hurdles require jumping over a fence-like obstacle while
running. Hurdles are for grades six and up but all of the other types of races
can be done in all grades.
The shot-put is a heavy, metal ball a little larger
than the size of a softball. The athlete spins to get momentum in a designated
area, and then throws the ball. The score is the distance the ball is thrown.
This is usually done by the older grades.
Track and field includes a few other sports, too.
These would include: Marathons, triathlons, the javelin throw, discus, pole
vaulting, the weight throw, and triple jump.
Track and field is a team sport, but it is more of an
individual challenge. You always strive to make your best, even better!
