I.H.M.’s 8th grade game
club was started this year by the 8th grade students and their
teacher, Mrs.
Falanga. Any 8th grader
can participate in this club, and when they choose to attend, they must pitch
in a quarter that goes toward prizes for the tournament round. This year is the first of this wonderful
club. The game club is a great way for the 8th graders to get
together and have fun with each other after school. There are a wide variety of games from the
easy playing level to the more challenging.
Students can play a basic game like checkers or more complicated games
such as euchre or chess.
One day in religion class during one
of our many off-topic talks, the students brought up the idea of having a game
club. Mrs. Falanga really liked this
idea! The students brainstormed and
within a few weeks were able to get this project underway. We had to think of what games to play, where
to play them, how to collect the money for the tournament round, and how long
to have these games last. It took some
hard work, but soon the game club was up and running.
The games that are played at the 8th
grade game club are chess, checkers, scrabble, euchre, and yahtzee. Chess and euchre are played in Mrs. Falanga’s
room. Checkers are played in Miss
Ward’s room. Yahtzee is played in
the computer lab. Scrabble is played in Mrs.
Cochran’s room. The game club meets
every Thursday at 2:30 P.M. and ends at 3:15 P.M. The “gamers”, as Mrs. Falanga likes to call
them, are allowed to change into casual clothes for game club. They can also listen to CD players. Sometimes people, such as Zach, enjoy wearing
sunglasses so no one can read their face.
The games aren’t extremely complicated
and can be learned by any student quickly.
The game of checkers is very easy to learn. The object of the game is to take away all of
the opponents’ checker pieces. In chess,
the goal is to trap the king so he cannot move in any direction without being
taken. Once the player traps the king he
exclaims,” Check mate! “ Scrabble is
played by forming words out of letter tiles earning the player points. Yahtzee is played by rolling a dice and
accumulating the most points possible.
Euchre is a very complicated card game played by four people using only
the 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace cards of the deck.
Game club is truly a great experience
for every 8th grader at I.H.M.
It’s a good way to get together with friends and play a noncompetitive
game in a relaxed atmosphere. We are so
thankful to Mrs. Falanga for her generosity in allowing us to start this club.
This is what the students think
about game club.

Samuel said that game club is
very fun, but sometimes boring. He thinks it would be more fun if we had this
during class time. The classes that would be taken up are Social Studies,
English, and Music. |
Zach said that he thought
game club was fun at first but then it got very boring because there were no
tournaments and he could just play those games at home. If we had tournaments, he would come. |
Kyle said that game club is
glorious that we can all come together and unite just to have fun! It is an exquisite experience for any
person, especially me. |
Beau said that game club was
a truly exciting, exquisite, entertaining gathering. He would give up any day
to play these wonderful games with these wonderful people. |
Tim said that he loves game
club and it is very fun because he gets to hang out with the kids at
school. He thinks it’s a very social
time where he can express his feelings deeply. He also said everyone is very calm and at
ease. |
