First Grade listening to their teacher read a book to them

The first grade could be described in two words, fun and exciting. The first graders have been learning many new things since we last heard from them. They have had fun, new, adventures. They have increased their knowledge in all of their subjects. These subjects consist of, Math, Religion, Reading, Computer, Science, English, Writing, Spanish, Music and Social Studies. Listed below are the things that the first graders are learning in each subject.

As mentioned above there are many new things to learn in all the subjects. In Math the first graders still have lots of different things to learn about in the last few months of school, we have left. Currently in math class the first grade is learning how to subtract. The have been working on this for a little while now, and they seem to be getting along very well, and accomplishing this basic skill of Math. In Math they have learned so far, all the basic skills they will need to move on to Second Grade, now that they have learned subtraction.

Awhile ago the first graders finished Social Studies and moved on to Science. The last thing they learned in Social Studies was about good citizenship. Included in this is how to keep your environment safe and clean. The First Graders feel that they have learned a great lesson from Social Studies. They can now try to improve their society and their future by sharing what they have learned about in Social Studies and how being good citizen could effect not just one person but people all over the world. This is a great lesson that the first graders can use all their lives.

Matter, what comes into your mind when you here that word? Well everyday in Science class the first graders have to answer this question. Matter, is a very hard to teach and learn about. The first grade teachers are doing a great job of teaching the first graders, this awesome, but hard topic. Some things that were discussed about making the topic of matter a little more fun and exciting was to have them do an experiment on matter and see how it is involved in every-day life.

The first grade reading is split up into two groups. One group meets at one time and the other group at another. Both of the groups read different stories, and they both do different activities. The first grade is separated into different groups because it is easier to keep track on what level each group is on, and to do things on that level. Currently the first graders are reading a story about frogs. Reading class is enjoyed by many of the first graders.

In English class the first graders are learning how to write and speak their language properly, because they will be using it everyday for the rest of their lives. They have a fun time learning how to write words. English class is very important in first grade, because the first graders have to know how to write in print before they can move on to second grade and learn how to write in cursive. They have said they are very excited about it.

Music class is a class the first graders take to extend their knowledge of the overall view of the learning process. In music the first graders are singing, and learning about the musical world and how it can affect them in their lives. Another one of the subjects the first grade takes is Spanish.  The first graders are learning Spanish and English all at once, seems hard right, well the first graders seem to handle it very well. In Spanish the first grader are learning how to speak about themselves. Located in the main hallway of the school is a picture the first graders drew of themselves. They wrote their names in a complete sentence in Spanish at the bottom. The pictures are colored and designed awesomely by the first graders.

There are two more extra classes the first graders have these two classes are computer and physical education (other wise known as gym). In gym class the first graders are skating. Once a year, for a few weeks, Immaculate Heart of Mary School rents skates for the entire student body. While skating in gym class the first graders are learning how to skate backward, T-stop, and how to switch direction. All of these skills are very hard to master, but the first graders have given it their all and have succeeded in it. The last special subject the first grade has is computer. Everyday when the first graders come into computer class they log on their assigned computer, log on, and then once everything is loaded they go to a typing program that helps increase the skill and level of their typing. Through out the rest of the year the first graders will be learning many new ways to make life a little easier by using the computer.

It is a very special time of year in the first grade religion class. Since it is close to Christmas, the first graders are learning about Advent. Some things included in their study is, the Advent candles, and what happened that lead up to Jesus’ birth. All these things play a very big part in the lives of the first graders. The teachers make the lessons fun by using different example’s and other things that let the first grades have a little more fun learning about the faith. Religion is considered a very important subject at Immaculate Heart of Mary School, because the whole school is based around our faith, which is learned in religion class.

Here is a picture of one of the many activities the first grade has done,

It is called Super Star; it is where each first grade has a day where they make a poster

about themselves

There are many things planned to make the rest of the first graders experiences of the first grade as fun as completely possible. The teachers in the first grade are very supportive of their students, they are there when the student’s need a helping hand, or whenever they just need someone to talk to. The two first grade teachers are Mrs. Lambes, and Mrs. Musser. These two teachers are amazing in what they do. They keep their classroom a bright wonderful place for learning, and they use fun ways to teach the first graders all they have to know to move on to the second grade.

Many of the first graders say that they enjoy first grade very much. They have enjoyed themselves in first grade and they hope to enjoy the rest of the year. Some activities that are coming up that the first graders say they are looking forward to are, their Christmas party and many other things they will be doing in each subject. The first grade is fun and exciting, with many new things to learn.

Outside of the first grade is located a tree,

showing their celebration for Thanksgiving.
