This year kicked
off with a bang for the Coming Together Project. With its first workshop at hand, the teen
board members had to pick up the pace.
Practicing speaking parts, touching up display posters, and grouping together,
were some of the minor things needing finished for the last meeting before
the big day. All were excited and were
ready for the next day. The morning of
the second of November dawned cold and wet.
No matter, the board members did not let that dampen their
spirits. Walking into Bath Church,
where the workshop was being held, the teen board assembled; nervousness and
excitement familiar among all. Before
speaking, I headed for the table where a few of my friends were
gathered. As encouraging echoes resounded around all of the
teens speaking, we were determined to make this a great day. The Coming
Together Workshop was held November 2, 2004, from nine o’clock until
one. The workshop started with
registration, a light snack, and a welcoming by Dr. Fannie L. Brown,
executive director of Coming Together Project, and Donna Pulling, Director of
the Coming Together Middle School Teen Board.
Directly after this, the Teen Board was introduced, and began to present
their small segment on bullying. Among
the students attending were a few girls from Immaculate Heart of Mary
School. The group consisted of
Heather, Holly, Emily, and Rachel.
They had volunteered their time to come and enjoy this seminar. We, then, proceeded to get to know those at
our different tables. Our small group
discussion on bullying involved learning the many ways that bullying not only
affects the target, but the people around them too. We also learned how to be better
bystanders; knowing when to help in a situation and distinguishing a
tattletale from a helpful bystander. Mrs. Tucker showed us the best
techniques in handling a bully. We, then, enjoyed a wonderful lunch provided
by the volunteers at Bath Church.
Following that, all the schools began a craft, with their fellow classmates,
to take back to their school. There,
they would present the poster to their classes. During the closing, once again, the Teen
Board ended with an interesting
segment on many different examples of metaphoric personalities. After a final farewell to the people
attending, all were invited to the next workshop held in April. With cooperation of all the teens,
teachers, and parents attending, the directors’ help, and my fellow teen
board members excitement, we pulled it off. |

Comments: Rachel enjoyed the workshop. She felt it gave a great insight on how to
deal with bullies of all kind. Heather thought that the workshop was
a lot of fun. She was enjoyed meeting
new people. Holly thoroughly enjoyed the workshop
and hopes to go again.
Sam thought the workshop was a really great experience. She learned a lot from it, and thought that
it was a lot of fun. She especially liked
how they had the two lady speakers come in to tell everyone about
bullying. She wants to go again! Emily thought that the workshop was very
educational. She definitely wants to go to the
next one! |
