The
cantors at I.H.M. grade school include students from 5th grade to
8th grade. Every Friday
they get together and sing for us at our school Mass. The leader of the
cantors is Mrs. Depew.
She picks
students from grades five through eight because she feels they are mature,
can follow directions, and behave appropriately during Mass and at any
practices that they have prior to Mass.
Mrs. Depew has
been leading the cantors for the entire seven years she has been here at
Immaculate Heart of Mary School. Mr.
Mills and Mrs. Depew work together to pick out the music for our children
Masses. The songs are based on the songs on the Liturgical Season and the
readings of the Gospel at Mass. Some of the songs that they sing are
seasonal, such as the Alleluia and the Responsorial Song. Some of the other songs that they sing are
sung through out the year. Mrs. Depew
tries to use the same songs each year so that students become familiar with
the songs and can follow the cantors.
The cantors practice during their recess and sometimes practice early
in the morning before school. They also practice for about twenty minutes
before Mass with Mrs. Depew. They
improve the Mass by helping lead the student body in song so that the
students know when to start and end.
Mrs. Depew chooses the soloists by deciding who is capable and willing
to learn the songs, has a good voice, and would not get too nervous to
sing. Mrs. Depew has even tried to
teach and sing songs in Spanish. She
does not do this very often because she doesn’t know Spanish.
Some of 8th
grade cantors consist of: Holly, Alex, Heather, Emily, Emily, Sam, Sam,
Maria, Evan, Rachel, Stephanie, Julie, Julia, Erin, and many more.
Most of the eighth grade cantors have been cantering since they were in fifth
grade. The soloists in the eighth
grade are Heather, Holly, and Erin.
They have done a wonderful job on their part. The first time they performed their solos
they were very nervous, but excited. From my perspective, the cantors love to
sing with their friends. When Holly
performed her first solo she was nervous because she didn’t want to mess up.
She wanted to make the best impression on the school as she could. Every time
she sings a new solo it ends with a success. We are all very proud of her!
The cantors
here at I.H.M. School work very hard at
singing the songs at Mass. The singing that the cantors do for our
school Masses has just puts another enjoyable event that is at Mass. Cantering is a privilege that Mrs. Depew
and Mr. Mills decided to do for the children. The children set a great
example for the school and hopefully encourage them to sing more. Cantering
is a great opportunity for children to show their wonderful talent of
singing.
