Sixth Grade is full of exciting activities.  The Students say they like 6th grade a lot. Jay says he likes it because he thinks that it’s easy. Jackie says she likes it because she loves the teachers. Melissa says it’s a new experience. They like being in sixth grade because they’re in middle school and it’s not as much work. At recess there’s not a lot going on, most of the boys just play football and the girls walk around and just talk. They are doing a lot in their classes. In art, the students just finished making color wheels and drug posters. Now, they started watching a video on drawing fruit. For Halloween the kids did a Day of the Dead presentation, in Spanish, telling the students a little about it. Now they are learning about days and months. The students are having a lot of fun in Computer Class. They learned how to crop pictures in Microsoft Photo Editor.  One of their favorite things that they’re learning about is Egypt. They are starting to make mummies and tombs in Social Studies. The students are learning a lot in Math. They are learning about graphs, the metric system, and elapse time. In Music class, they started learning about notes and the middle ages. For Religion class they are making the Jessie Tree and ornaments to put on it. They are also learning about Joseph. In English they’re learning about adjectives and what they can modify. In science they’re learning the parts of cells. For Science class, Mrs. Cochran has planned for them to do cell projects and skit kits.

One of the things the sixth grade does for fun is a prayer tree. Every morning Mrs. Cochran makes the students write a special intention on a leaf and then they put them on the tree in the hall.

The sixth graders have plenty of reading to keep them busy. They read at least two books a month and a complete summary on both of them. Right now, the B group is reading “Number the Stars” and the A Group is reading “Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH.”

Most kids say their favorite classes are Gym, Lunch and Recess. Right now in Gym class they are skating and some kids are chosen to help teach the Kindergarten how to skate. Once a week the kids have tests on what they have learned in class.

This is not only Mrs. Cochran’s first year at IHM, but it is also her first year teaching sixth grade. Mrs. Cochran said that she has taught 9th graders before but not 6th graders and she loves it. She said that the kids are old enough to know better but they can still have a good time. The kids love their two teachers Mrs. Hardesty and Mrs. Cochran and they’re having a wonderful time in sixth grade.
