What is First
Communion?
First Communion is a
personal invitation from the Christ Jesus to children, usually in the second
grade. It is a time of great
celebration. First Communion is when
candidates are called to receive Jesus in the form of bread and wine. They come to understand that the bread and
wine they receive is not ordinary bread and wine, but is Jesus’ body and blood.
The second graders have
learned that the first Eucharist was the Last Supper. This was when Jesus gave himself to us in the
form of bread and wine.
When the child goes up
to receive Jesus, the priest holds up the host and says, “The body of
Christ”. The child will respond “Amen”
to show that they agree and believe that it is Jesus’ body. Then they go over to the priest with the
wine. The priest holds up the cup and
says, “The blood of Christ.” The child
again responds “Amen” to show they agree and believe that it is Jesus’
blood. The child can choose if they want
to take the wine. They can pass if they
want.
This year’s First
Communion class will receive the Eucharist on May 16, 2004.
