We chose Mary the Mother of God to represent our school.  We want our students to act like her, from her kind and charming manner, to her sinless self.  She showed bravery and courage when accepting to be the mother of God’s only son knowing full well that there would be much trouble ahead.  We often say prayers to Mary in Mass and in the classrooms.  The entire month of May is dedicated to our Holy Mother.

Mary lived her life as a normal girl; carrying the large jars of water, grinding the wheat into flour, making the wool into flower, and preparing dishes for dinner.  Mary learned some of her best lessons by just looking at the simple things and seeing them in a different way.  She lived in a rural land in Galilee.  Mary would go down to the local well and talk to the other woman about everyday news.  If you came to see her she would be acting just like the other entire woman in the land doing simple chores.

Mary’s faith was uncontested in the Jewish faith.  In a place where war and fighting was everywhere you looked her faith still could not be shaken.  Despite her strong faith she still rarely stood out even to her closet friends.  Men still had almost all of the authority so she was still just thought of as a wife and mother.  When Mary was about fifteen her parents arranged for her to get married to a carpenter as it was custom.  That all changed one day.

One day when Mary was going about her usual day an angel appeared before her and said she would have a child by the Holy Spirit.  Mary replied,”I am the handmaid of the Lord let what you have said be done to me.”  After the angel left Mary was troubled with many questions.  She had to find a way to try to explain this to Joseph.  While she was thinking of a solution to tell him Joseph had a dream in where an angel told him the situation and to name the baby Jesus also he must still marry Mary.  That was the day that changed Mary’s life forever.  Before then she would just go about her every day schedule like everyone else.

All through the years Mary stayed with her son.  Even at his death when all the disciples fled and denied him as their leader Mary still stayed with him.  She faced many problems and difficulties all through her life, whether it was when she lost him at the Temple or when Joseph died and left Mary and Jesus to find food and shelter by themselves.  Even all trough those years she never faltered in her faith or questioned God’s will.  Mary was rewarded for her faith by being the only person assumed into Heaven.

We try to act like Mary in every way.  In the paragraphs above I showed you how Mary devoted her life to Jesus and showed bravery by staying with Jesus all through his life.  She would never forsake him like the disciples did.  Their have been many feast days that honor the Holy Mother.  That is why we chose Mary as the patron of our school.
