Mrs. Depew is the music teacher here at Immaculate Heart of Mary.  She teaches grades Kindergarten through Eighth grade.  They are all learning different things like singing and learning about famous composers.  The 5th grade is even playing the recorder.  There isn’t really a music room so they use the Schmidt Library.  It is also used for meetings and Bingo.

The 4th graders are learning how to read and play short simple songs on the recorder using three notes; G, A, and B.  A recorder is a flute with eight finger holes and a whistle like mouthpiece.  They are also identifying note names on the staff, note values, and to tap and count rhythm patterns.

The 5th grade is learning to identify 16th notes and how to perform them in a rhythm pattern.  They are also learning how to identify the differences between band and orchestra instrumentation.  The 5th graders are also practicing music to sing in Mass after Easter.

The 6th grade is learning about the Renaissance Period and some of the composers of that time period.  They are learning about the different types of music that they played, and about their life.

The 7th graders are learning about the life and music of George Fredrick Handel and how to identify what makes a quality performance.

The 8th grade takes music half the year and then switch to gym. Right now they are finished with the year, but they just finished doing their musical, “The Pirates of Penzance.”  The musical was a big success and a lot of people came to enjoy the exciting event.
