Music      9/29/03

Ricky C. and Mike W.

The music classroom is used for a meeting room, so every morning when Mrs. DePew gets there her and two other students bring the chairs, cabinets, shelves, and table in. All the grades are doing rhythm pattern, musical symbols, vocal quality, and music history. The teacher is Mrs. DePew. She has been teaching music class for eleven years, but has been giving private piano lessons for twenty-five years. She is originally from Hamilton, Illinois.

The first and second graders will be performing for Grandparent’s Day, the third fourth and fifth graders will be performing for Christmas, and the sixth seventh and eighth grade will be havening a musical in the spring. The grades that are in music are kindergarteners to eighth grade. The largest class has thirty students and the smallest has twenty-one students. The fourth fifth and sixth graders will be going to the Akron Civic Theater on October 15.

We asked students how they liked music and they said it was fun. They like the singing and the songs that Mrs. DePew chose for them to sing. They don’t like worksheets and doing composers because they get confused with the different ones. Most of the students like to perform at church or for a special events, but some of them are nervous and don’t like to. Most of the 8th grade don’t like music because they do not like to sing.
